Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) deposits

Collecting tips
- Look for associated minerals. Galena is frequently found with sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, quartz, calcite, and fluorite. Identifying these associated minerals can indicate the presence of galena.
- Check for high density. Galena is noticeably heavy for its size due to its high specific gravity. This is a key identification feature.
- Observe cleavage. The perfect cubic cleavage is a very distinctive characteristic. Look for specimens that break into cubes or show step-like fractures.
- Perform a streak test. Galena leaves a characteristic lead-gray to black streak on an unglazed porcelain plate, which helps differentiate it from other metallic minerals.
- Safety Precautions. Always handle galena with gloves and wash hands thoroughly after handling. Avoid inhaling dust from galena, as lead is toxic. Do not ingest or allow children to handle galena without supervision. Store specimens in a way that prevents dust dispersal.
