Tri-State Mining District, USA
Historically significant region spanning parts of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma, known for large MVT deposits of galena and sphalerite.

Collecting tips
- Look for associated minerals. Galena is frequently found with sphalerite (zinc sulfide), chalcopyrite (copper iron sulfide), pyrite (iron sulfide), quartz, calcite, and fluorite. The presence of these minerals can indicate a potential galena deposit.
- Check for high density. Galena is notably heavy for its size due to its high specific gravity (7.4-7.6 g/cm³). This can be a useful field identification characteristic.
- Observe cleavage. Its perfect cubic cleavage is a key diagnostic feature. Look for specimens that break into cubes or show distinct right-angle steps on fractured surfaces.
- Note the metallic luster and color. The bright, silvery-lead-gray metallic luster is very characteristic. Be aware that it can tarnish to a duller gray or iridescent blue/purple.
- Safety Precautions. Galena contains lead, which is a toxic heavy metal. Always handle galena with gloves and wash hands thoroughly after handling. Avoid inhaling dust from galena, especially when breaking or crushing samples. Do not ingest or allow children to handle galena without supervision. Store specimens securely to prevent accidental exposure.
