Collecting tips
- Look for Metamorphic Terrains. Focus on areas known for regional metamorphism, especially those associated with ancient or active mountain belts and subduction zones.
- Identify Key Minerals. Search for dark, prismatic amphibole crystals and distinctive reddish, equant garnet crystals embedded in a matrix. The contrast in color and crystal habit is often striking.
- Observe Foliation. While not always strongly foliated, look for preferred orientation of amphibole crystals or a subtle banding, which is characteristic of metamorphic rocks.
- Check for Porphyroblasts. Large, well-formed garnet crystals (porphyroblasts) are a key indicator and often stand out from the finer-grained matrix.
