Collecting tips

1. Look for Metamorphic Terrains. Garnets are most commonly found in areas with extensive regional metamorphism, such as mountain belts or ancient shield areas. Look for outcrops of schist, gneiss, or amphibolite.
2. Identify Characteristic Host Rocks. Learn to recognize common garnet-bearing host rocks. For example, mica schist often has a silvery sheen and platy texture, while amphibolite is dark and dense. Kimberlites (for pyrope) are often weathered to a yellowish-brown 'yellow ground'.
3. Search for Crystal Forms. Garnets often form distinct dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystals. Look for these characteristic shapes protruding from or embedded within the rock matrix.
