Collecting tips
- Look in Metamorphic Rocks. Garnets are common in schists, gneisses, and amphibolites. Look for distinct, often reddish, dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystals embedded in the matrix.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Due to their hardness and resistance to weathering, garnets often accumulate in riverbeds and placer deposits. Sifting through gravels can yield well-formed crystals.
- Examine Skarns. Grossular garnets are frequently found in skarn deposits, which are contact metamorphic rocks formed at the interface of igneous intrusions and carbonate rocks.
- Identify Crystal Habit. The characteristic dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystal forms are key identifiers for garnets, even in rough or weathered specimens.
- Test Hardness. Garnets are relatively hard (6.5-7.5 on Mohs scale), which can help distinguish them from softer minerals in the field.
