- Identify Bladed Blue Crystals. Search for elongated, often blue to gray-blue, bladed crystals within the gneiss. Kyanite's distinctive color and habit are key identifiers.
- Check for Hardness Anisotropy. Kyanite exhibits anisotropic hardness (4.5-5 parallel to length, 6-7 perpendicular to length). While difficult to test in situ, this is a unique property for confirmation in a lab setting.
