Canadian Shield
Extensive exposures of Precambrian garnetiferous gneisses are found across the Canadian Shield, particularly in Ontario, Quebec, and Labrador.
Fennoscandian Shield
Widespread occurrences in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, often associated with ancient orogenic belts.
Appalachian Mountains, USA
Metamorphic core complexes and uplifted basement rocks in the Appalachian orogen contain significant garnetiferous gneiss units.

Collecting tips
- Look for Banding. Gneiss is defined by its distinct compositional banding. Look for alternating light and dark layers.
- Identify Garnet Porphyroblasts. Search for reddish, often rounded, equant crystals that are typically larger than the surrounding matrix minerals. These are the garnets.
- Examine Metamorphic Terrains. Garnetiferous gneiss is a high-grade metamorphic rock, so focus your search in areas known for regional metamorphism, such as ancient mountain belts or shield areas.
- Check for Associated Minerals. Common associated minerals include quartz, feldspar (orthoclase, plagioclase), biotite, muscovite, hornblende, and sometimes sillimanite or kyanite, which also indicate high-grade metamorphism.
