Significant iron ore deposits, including goethite, are found in the Mesabi Range (Minnesota) and other areas, often associated with banded iron formations.
Siegerland, Germany
Historically known for excellent specimens of botryoidal goethite, often associated with iron mining districts.
Cornwall, England
Various mining districts have produced goethite, sometimes in botryoidal forms, often as a secondary mineral in tin and copper deposits.
Brazil
Extensive lateritic iron ore deposits, where goethite is a primary component, particularly in Minas Gerais.
Australia
Large iron ore deposits in Western Australia contain significant goethite, often in massive or earthy forms.
Collecting tips
- Look in Oxidized Zones. Goethite is prevalent in the oxidized caps (gossans) of sulfide ore deposits and in areas where iron-rich rocks have undergone significant weathering.
- Check Cavities and Fractures. Botryoidal forms often grow in open spaces within rocks, such as vugs, geodes, or fractures, where solutions can precipitate the mineral.
- Identify by Streak. A characteristic yellowish-brown streak is a key identifier for goethite, distinguishing it from hematite (red streak) and other dark minerals.
- Examine Luster and Habit. The submetallic to metallic luster on the botryoidal surfaces, combined with the grape-like shape, is highly indicative of botryoidal goethite.
