- Look for Water-Worn Surfaces. Pebbles are characterized by their smooth, rounded, or sub-rounded shapes, indicating transport and abrasion by water or ice.
- Observe Color and Texture. Granite pebbles will be lighter, often with visible mineral grains. Basalt pebbles will be darker, typically fine-grained, and may show small vesicles.
- Check for Hardness. Both granite and basalt are relatively hard rocks (Mohs 6-7), which helps them resist abrasion and survive as pebbles.
- Examine the Environment. Focus on areas where clastic sediments accumulate, such as riverbanks, lake shores, and beaches.
