Where to find K2 Jasper
Skardu area, Northern Areas, Pakistan
The primary and currently only known source of K2 Jasper is near the base of K2 Mountain (Mount Godwin Austen) in the Skardu region of the Northern Areas of Pakistan. This remote and high-altitude location is where the granite with azurite inclusions was first discovered and is exclusively mined.
Collecting tips
- Geological Context. Look for granitic intrusions in areas known for copper mineralization and hydrothermal activity. The specific conditions for K2 Jasper's formation are quite unique, making it a rare find.
- Visual Identification. The most distinctive feature is the stark contrast between the white/gray granite and the vibrant blue azurite 'orbs'. This visual characteristic is key to identification.
- Hardness Test. The granite matrix will be hard (Mohs 6-7). The azurite inclusions are softer (Mohs 3.5-4), so care should be taken during handling and processing.
