Where to find K2 Jasper
Skardu region, Northern Areas, Pakistan
The primary and currently only known source of K2 Jasper is near the base of K2 Mountain (Mount Godwin Austen) in the Skardu region of the Northern Areas of Pakistan. This remote and high-altitude location is where the unique granite with azurite mineralization was first discovered and is exclusively mined.
Collecting tips
- Geological Context. Look for granitic outcrops in regions known for copper mineralization and hydrothermal activity. The specific conditions for K2 Jasper's formation are quite unique, making it a rare find outside its known locality.
- Visual Identification. The most distinctive feature is the stark contrast between the white/grey granite and the vibrant blue azurite 'orbs'. This visual characteristic is key to its identification.
- Hardness Test (Caution). While the granite matrix is hard (Mohs 6-7), azurite is much softer (Mohs 3.5-4). A scratch test on the blue inclusions would confirm the presence of a softer mineral than the surrounding granite, but this is destructive and not recommended for specimens.
- Acid Test (Extreme Caution). Azurite and malachite are copper carbonates and will effervesce (fizz) when a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid is applied. This test is destructive and should only be performed on a small, inconspicuous area, or a fragment, and with extreme care due to the corrosive nature of the acid. This test confirms the presence of carbonate minerals, but not specifically azurite or malachite without further analysis.
