Where to find K2 Jasper
Skardu area, Northern Areas, Pakistan
The primary and most well-known source, found near the base of K2 mountain in the Karakoram range. This is the type locality for K2 Jasper.
Collecting tips
- Visual Identification. Look for the characteristic white to grey granitic background with distinct, often rounded, bright blue spots. The blue color is key to identifying azurite.
- Hardness Test (Caution). The granite matrix will be relatively hard (Mohs 6-7 for quartz and feldspar). The azurite inclusions are much softer (Mohs 3.5-4). A careful scratch test on an inconspicuous area might reveal the difference, but be cautious not to damage the specimen.
- Acid Test (Not Recommended for Collectors). Azurite (a carbonate) will effervesce with dilute hydrochloric acid. This test is destructive and not recommended for finished specimens or valuable rough. It can confirm the presence of azurite but is not necessary for identification.
- Specific Gravity. The overall specific gravity will be a composite of granite (2.6-2.7 g/cm³) and azurite (3.77-3.89 g/cm³), making it slightly denser than typical granite if azurite content is significant.
