Collecting tips
- Look for Metamorphic Terrains. Aventurine is typically found in areas with regional metamorphic rocks such as quartzites and mica schists. Geologic maps can help identify such regions.
- Identify the 'Aventurescence'. The most distinctive feature is the shimmering effect caused by tiny mineral inclusions. Rotate the sample under light to observe this characteristic sparkle.
- Check for Hardness. As a quartz variety, aventurine will scratch glass and steel (Mohs hardness of 7). This helps distinguish it from softer look-alikes.
- Observe Color and Inclusions. Green aventurine's color is due to fuchsite, which appears as tiny green flakes. Other colors will have different inclusions (e.g., hematite for red/brown).
