Where to find Desert Rose
Sahara Desert (North Africa)
Extensive deposits, particularly in Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, known for large and well-formed specimens.
Oklahoma, USA
The official state rock of Oklahoma, found in abundance in the Permian Garber Sandstone formation, particularly in the Little Sahara State Park area. These are typically barite roses.
Mexico
Various desert regions, including Chihuahua and Coahuila, yield significant quantities of gypsum roses.
Spain
Areas like Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands are known for their desert rose formations.
Australia
Arid interior regions, particularly in Western Australia and South Australia, where evaporite conditions are prevalent.
Collecting tips
- Look in Arid Environments. Desert roses are found in dry, desert regions where groundwater evaporation is high, leading to mineral precipitation.
- Search in Sandy Soils. They typically form within sandy or silty soils, often near the surface or in shallow excavations.
- Identify Evaporite Deposits. Areas with historical or current playa lakes, sabkhas, or other evaporite-rich sediments are prime locations.
- Gentle Excavation. Desert roses are fragile. Use soft tools like brushes or small hand trowels for excavation to avoid damage.
- Distinguish from Barite Roses. While visually similar, barite roses are significantly denser (specific gravity ~4.5) than gypsum roses (specific gravity ~2.3). A simple weight test can often differentiate them.
