Where to find Desert Rose
Sahara Desert (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco)
Known for producing large and well-formed gypsum Desert Roses, often with significant sand inclusion.
Oklahoma, USA
Famous for its Barite Desert Roses, particularly in the Garber Sandstone formation, which is the state rock of Oklahoma.
Mexico (Coahuila, Chihuahua)
Produces both gypsum and barite Desert Roses, often with distinct forms and colors.
Saudi Arabia
Significant occurrences of gypsum Desert Roses in desert environments.

Found in arid interior regions, typically gypsum varieties.
Collecting tips
- Look in Arid Environments. Focus on desert or semi-desert regions, especially areas with ancient or active playas, sabkhas, or sand dunes where groundwater evaporation is prevalent.
- Examine Sandy Soils. Desert Roses are often found partially buried in sandy or silty soils. Look for areas where erosion has exposed them.
- Check for Evaporite Deposits. Areas with other evaporite minerals like halite or other gypsum forms may indicate suitable conditions for Desert Rose formation.
- Handle with Care. Gypsum Desert Roses are relatively soft and fragile. Barite varieties are harder but can still be delicate. Use appropriate tools for extraction and protect specimens during transport.
- Distinguish Gypsum from Barite. Perform a hardness test (gypsum is 2 on Mohs, barite is 3-3.5) or a specific gravity test (gypsum ~2.3, barite ~4.5) to differentiate between the two types if necessary.
