Where to find Desert Rose
Sahara Desert (Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco)
Extensive deposits of large and well-formed gypsum Desert Roses are found across the Sahara, particularly in Algeria and Tunisia.
Oklahoma, USA
Known for its distinctive reddish-brown barite Desert Roses, particularly in the Garber Sandstone formation.
Mexico (Coahuila, Chihuahua)
Significant occurrences of gypsum Desert Roses, often with fine sand inclusions.
Spain (Fuerteventura, Canary Islands)
Produces gypsum Desert Roses, sometimes with a more translucent appearance.

Collecting tips
- Look in Arid Environments. Focus on desert or semi-desert regions, especially areas with ancient or active playa lakes, sabkhas, or dry riverbeds where evaporitic conditions are or were present.
- Search in Sandy Soils. Desert Roses form within sand. Look for them partially exposed on the surface or just beneath the surface in sandy or silty sediments.
- Identify Associated Minerals. They often occur with other evaporite minerals like halite, other forms of gypsum (e.g., selenite crystals), and sometimes calcite.
- Gentle Excavation. Desert Roses can be fragile. Use soft tools like brushes or small trowels for excavation to avoid damaging the delicate crystal structures.
- Distinguish from Barite Roses. While visually similar, gypsum Desert Roses are softer (Mohs 2) and lighter (SG ~2.3) than barite Desert Roses (Mohs 3-3.5, SG ~4.5). A simple scratch test or density estimation can help differentiate them.
