Permian Basin, USA

Collecting tips
- Taste Test (Caution Advised). Halite is the only common mineral with a distinct salty taste. This is a primary diagnostic test, but ensure the sample is clean and free of contaminants before tasting. Do not taste unknown minerals.
- Cleavage and Crystal Shape. Look for perfect cubic cleavage. Even if the sample is massive, breaking it will often reveal smaller cubic fragments. Well-formed cubic crystals are also a strong indicator.
- Hardness. Halite is very soft (Mohs hardness 2-2.5) and can be easily scratched with a fingernail.
- Solubility. Halite is readily soluble in water. A small fragment will dissolve if placed in water, which can be a useful, though destructive, test.
- Geological Context. Search in evaporite deposits, salt domes, or areas with a history of ancient seas or salt lakes. Modern playas and salt flats are also good locations.
