Where to find Halite
Permian Basin, USA

Collecting tips
- Taste Test (Caution Advised). Halite is the only common mineral with a distinct salty taste. A small, clean sample can be touched to the tongue for identification. Always ensure the sample is clean and from a known, safe source before tasting.
- Cleavage Examination. Look for perfect cubic cleavage. If you break a piece, it will typically fracture into smaller cube-shaped fragments.
- Hardness Test. Halite is relatively soft (Mohs hardness 2-2.5) and can be scratched easily with a fingernail or a copper coin.
- Solubility. Halite is readily soluble in water. A small fragment will dissolve if placed in water, which can be a distinguishing characteristic from other minerals.
- Associated Minerals. Often found with other evaporite minerals such as gypsum, anhydrite, sylvite, and carnallite. Recognizing these associations can aid in identification.
