Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic Terrains. Bloodstone is often found in areas with past volcanic activity, particularly in the amygdaloidal cavities of basaltic or andesitic lavas.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Due to its hardness and resistance to weathering, bloodstone can be found in riverbeds and gravel deposits downstream from its primary source.
- Examine Rock Outcrops. Look for dark green, cryptocrystalline masses with reddish inclusions within exposed rock formations, especially those showing signs of hydrothermal alteration.
- Use a Hand Lens. A hand lens can help confirm the cryptocrystalline nature and identify the characteristic red hematite spots against the green background.
- Distinguish from Similar Minerals. Be careful not to confuse it with green jasper or aventurine. Bloodstone's defining feature is the distinct red spots on a dark green background, unlike the more uniform color of aventurine or the often banded/patterned nature of jasper.
