Australia
Pilbara region (Western Australia) is a world-leading producer, primarily hematite from BIFs.
Brazil
Minas Gerais state, particularly the 'Iron Quadrangle', with vast hematite deposits.

Numerous deposits across the country, including BIFs and other types.
India
Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka states have significant hematite and goethite deposits.

KMA (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly) is a massive magnetite-rich BIF deposit.

Collecting tips
- Look for Reddish Stains. Iron oxides often stain surrounding rocks and soil reddish-brown, indicating their presence.
- Check for Density. Iron ore minerals are typically denser than common rock-forming minerals, so a heavy sample can be a good indicator.
- Perform a Streak Test. Hematite produces a characteristic reddish-brown streak, goethite/limonite a yellowish-brown streak, and magnetite a black streak. This is a crucial diagnostic test.
- Test for Magnetism. Magnetite is strongly magnetic and will attract a magnet. Some hematite can be weakly magnetic due to intergrowths with magnetite.
- Observe Crystal Habit. Specular hematite (micaceous) has a distinct metallic luster and platy habit. Botryoidal or reniform habits are common for hematite and goethite.
