Australia
Pilbara region (Western Australia) is a world-leading producer, primarily hematite from BIFs.
Brazil
Minas Gerais state, particularly the 'Iron Quadrangle,' with vast hematite deposits.
China
Numerous deposits across the country, including BIFs and other types.
India
Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka states have significant hematite and goethite deposits.
Russia
KMA (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly) is one of the largest iron ore basins globally, primarily magnetite and hematite.
United States
Lake Superior region (Minnesota, Michigan) with extensive BIFs (taconite), and various smaller deposits elsewhere.

Labrador Trough (Quebec and Newfoundland & Labrador) with large BIF-derived deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look for Reddish Stains. Iron oxides often stain surrounding rocks and soil a distinctive reddish-brown or yellow-brown color, indicating their presence.
- Check for Density. Iron ore minerals are typically dense. A rock that feels unusually heavy for its size might contain significant iron minerals.
- Streak Test. Hematite produces a characteristic reddish-brown streak, while goethite yields a yellowish-brown streak. This is a key diagnostic test.
- Magnetism. While pure hematite and goethite are not magnetic, some varieties of hematite can be weakly magnetic due to intergrowths with magnetite. Magnetite itself is strongly magnetic.
- Geological Maps. Consult geological maps of an area to identify regions known for iron ore deposits or Banded Iron Formations.
