Collecting tips
- Look for Reddish-Brown Soil. High concentrations of iron oxides often stain the surrounding soil and rocks a distinctive reddish-brown or yellow-brown color.
- Check for High Density. Iron ore minerals are noticeably heavier than most common rock-forming minerals. Lift a sample to feel its heft.
- Perform a Streak Test. Hematite produces a characteristic reddish-brown streak, while goethite produces a yellowish-brown streak. This is a key diagnostic test.
- Examine for Metallic Luster. Some forms of hematite (specularite) have a distinct metallic luster, while others are dull and earthy. Goethite can also have an adamantine to dull luster.
- Investigate Geological Maps. Consult geological maps of an area to identify regions known for iron ore deposits or banded iron formations.
