China

Collecting tips
- Look for Reddish Stains. Hematite often leaves a distinctive reddish-brown streak and can stain surrounding rocks and soil red.
- Check for Density. Iron ores are typically dense minerals, which can be noticeable when handling specimens.
- Observe Luster and Form. Specular hematite has a metallic sheen, while earthy hematite and goethite are dull. Look for botryoidal or reniform habits.
- Test the Streak. Hematite produces a characteristic reddish-brown streak, while goethite produces a yellowish-brown streak. This is a key diagnostic test.
- Geological Context. Search in areas known for Banded Iron Formations, ancient sedimentary basins, or areas with significant weathering of iron-rich rocks.
