Where to find Iron Ore
Australia
Pilbara region (Western Australia) is one of the world's largest iron ore provinces, primarily hematite from BIFs.
Brazil
Minas Gerais state, particularly the 'Iron Quadrangle,' hosts vast high-grade hematite deposits.
China
Numerous deposits, often lower grade, distributed across various provinces.
India
Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka states have significant hematite and goethite deposits.
Russia
KMA (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly) is a massive iron ore basin, primarily magnetite and hematite.
United States
Lake Superior region (Minnesota, Michigan) with extensive BIFs (taconite), and smaller deposits elsewhere.
Canada
Labrador Trough (Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador) with large BIF-related deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look for Reddish Stains. Iron-rich rocks often leave reddish-brown stains on surrounding rocks or soil due to weathering and oxidation.
- Check for Density. Iron ore minerals are notably dense. Pick up a sample; if it feels unusually heavy for its size, it might be iron ore.
- Perform a Streak Test. This is the most reliable field test. Rub the mineral across an unglazed porcelain streak plate. Hematite will produce a characteristic reddish-brown streak, while goethite will yield a yellowish-brown streak. This distinguishes them from other dark minerals like magnetite (black streak) or pyrite (greenish-black streak).
- Observe Luster and Habit. Specular hematite has a distinct metallic sheen. Botryoidal or reniform habits are common for both hematite and goethite. Earthy varieties will be dull.
- Geological Context. Search in areas known for Banded Iron Formations (BIFs), ancient sedimentary basins, or areas with significant weathering of iron-rich rocks.
