Where to find Chrysocolla in Matrix
United States (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah)
Significant deposits, particularly in Arizona (e.g., Inspiration Mine, Ray Mine, Morenci Mine), where it occurs in porphyry copper deposits. The 'Gem Silica' variety is notably found here.
Chile
Major copper-producing country with numerous chrysocolla occurrences, often in large-scale porphyry copper deposits.
Peru
Known for various copper deposits that yield chrysocolla, sometimes in association with other colorful copper minerals.
Democratic Republic of Congo
Important source of copper and cobalt, with chrysocolla found in the oxidized zones of these deposits.
Russia
Ural Mountains region has occurrences of chrysocolla.
Israel (Eilat)
Historically known for 'Eilat Stone,' a mixture of chrysocolla, malachite, azurite, and turquoise in a sandstone matrix.
Collecting tips
- Target Copper Deposits. Focus your search on the oxidized zones (gossans) of known or historical copper mining districts. Look for areas with green or blue staining on rocks.
- Look for Associated Minerals. Chrysocolla often co-occurs with malachite (green), azurite (dark blue), cuprite (red), and native copper. The presence of these minerals can indicate chrysocolla.
- Examine Fractures and Cavities. Chrysocolla frequently forms as crusts, coatings, or fillings in fractures, vugs, and cavities within the host rock. Break open weathered rocks in promising areas.
- Check for Silicification. The most desirable chrysocolla (Gem Silica) is often silicified, meaning it has been infiltrated by quartz. Look for areas where the blue-green material appears harder and more translucent.
- Safety Precautions. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when prospecting, including safety glasses, gloves, and sturdy footwear. Be aware of unstable ground in old mining areas. Chrysocolla itself is not highly toxic, but associated copper minerals can be. Avoid inhaling dust when breaking rocks. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
Quick Check
