Collecting tips
- Look for exposed outcrops. Weathering rinds are best observed on rock surfaces that have been exposed to the elements for extended periods, such as road cuts, river banks, cliffs, and glacial erratics.
- Examine color and texture variations. The most obvious indicator is a distinct color change and often a softer, more earthy texture on the exterior compared to the interior of the rock.
- Break open a sample. To confirm the presence of a rind, carefully break a rock to expose the fresh interior and observe the concentric layering or gradual transition from the weathered exterior.
- Consider the environment. Weathering is more pronounced in humid, warm climates, but rinds can form in any climate, albeit at different rates and with different characteristics.
