Humid Tropical Regions
Extensive and deep weathering profiles (saprolite) are common in humid tropical and subtropical regions due to high temperatures and abundant rainfall promoting intense chemical weathering.
Temperate Regions
Weathering is also significant in temperate zones, with both physical and chemical processes contributing to rock breakdown, often forming shallower weathering profiles than in the tropics.
Arid and Semi-Arid Regions
Physical weathering (e.g., thermal expansion, salt wedging) is often dominant, leading to granular disintegration and exfoliation, though chemical weathering still occurs.
Collecting tips
- Look for Discoloration. Weathered rocks often exhibit distinct color changes (reds, browns, yellows) compared to their fresh counterparts due to the formation of iron oxides.
- Check for Friability. Test the rock's strength. Weathered rock is typically softer and more easily broken or crumbled than fresh rock.
- Observe Relict Textures. Sometimes, the original texture or structure of the parent rock (e.g., bedding, foliation, relict mineral grains) can still be discerned within the weathered material, providing clues to its origin.
- Examine for Secondary Minerals. Look for the presence of new minerals like clay minerals (often soft and earthy) or iron oxide coatings/stains.
- Consider the Environment. Weathered rock is most prevalent at the surface or in shallow subsurface exposures, such as road cuts, stream banks, and construction sites.
