Where to find Unidentified Rocks
Orogenic Belts
Regions of mountain building where sedimentary rocks are subjected to varying degrees of burial and tectonic stress, leading to low-grade metamorphism.
Contact Metamorphic Aureoles
Areas surrounding igneous intrusions where heat from the magma alters surrounding sedimentary rocks, potentially leading to ambiguous textures.
Deep Sedimentary Basins
Where sedimentary rocks have undergone significant burial and diagenesis, approaching very low-grade metamorphic conditions.
Collecting tips
- Examine for Relict Textures. Look for any faint signs of original bedding, clastic grains, or fossils that might suggest a sedimentary origin, even if partially obscured.
- Check for Incipient Metamorphic Features. Observe for very fine-grained foliation, a slightly crystalline sheen, or a harder, more massive texture than typical sedimentary rocks, which could indicate metamorphism.
- Perform Hardness Test. A slightly higher hardness than typical shale or mudstone, but not as hard as a well-developed slate or quartzite, might suggest an indeterminate nature.
- Consider Geological Context. Note the surrounding rocks and geological setting. Is it near an igneous intrusion? In a tectonically active zone? This can provide clues to its origin.
- Seek Expert Analysis. For definitive identification, petrographic thin section analysis under a microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), or other geochemical analyses by a professional geologist or petrologist are often required.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Variable (grey, brown, black, tan)
- Luster:
- Dull to earthy, sometimes sub-vitreous
- Streak:
- White to light grey, or matching the rock's color if fine-grained and dark.
