Collecting tips
- Geological Maps. Consult regional geological maps for areas known to host iron ore deposits, particularly Precambrian shield areas for BIFs or tropical regions for lateritic ores.
- Magnetic Anomalies. Magnetite-rich iron ores (e.g., BIFs) often produce strong magnetic anomalies, which can be detected by geophysical surveys. Look for areas with reported magnetic highs.
- Reddish Staining. Outcrops of iron ore, especially hematite and goethite, often exhibit reddish-brown to yellowish-brown staining on weathered surfaces due to iron oxidation.
- Heavy Weight. Iron ore is typically dense and feels heavy for its size due to the high specific gravity of iron oxides.
- Streak Test. A key diagnostic test: hematite yields a reddish-brown streak, magnetite a black streak, and goethite a yellowish-brown streak. This helps differentiate them from other dark minerals.
