Collecting tips
- Look for weathered outcrops. Iron ore (Limonite/Goethite) often forms in the oxidized zones of other iron-rich deposits. Look for reddish-brown or yellowish-brown staining on rocks and soil.
- Check for heavy samples. Despite their often porous appearance, iron ores are relatively dense. A sample that feels heavier than expected for its size is a good indicator.
- Perform a streak test. The characteristic yellowish-brown to brown streak is a key diagnostic feature for Limonite and Goethite, distinguishing them from other iron minerals like Hematite (red streak) or Magnetite (black streak).
- Examine geological maps. Consult geological maps for areas known to have iron formations, gossans, or lateritic soils. These are prime locations for finding Limonite and Goethite.
- Observe morphology. Look for botryoidal, stalactitic, or earthy masses, which are common habits for these minerals.
