Where to find Iron Oxide
Banded Iron Formations (BIFs)
Ancient sedimentary rocks, primarily Precambrian, found globally (e.g., Hamersley Basin, Australia; Lake Superior region, USA; Minas Gerais, Brazil). These are major sources of hematite.
Weathering Zones and Gossans
Upper oxidized portions of ore deposits, where iron sulfides have weathered to form goethite and limonite (e.g., many porphyry copper deposits, massive sulfide deposits).
Bog Iron Ores
Modern or geologically recent accumulations of limonite and goethite in swamps and bogs, formed by bacterial action and precipitation from iron-rich waters (e.g., Scandinavia, North America).
Lateritic Soils
Tropical and subtropical regions with intense chemical weathering, where iron oxides (goethite, hematite) concentrate in the soil profile (e.g., parts of Africa, South America, Australia).
Collecting tips
- Look for Red/Brown Staining. Iron oxides are responsible for the characteristic red, orange, and brown colors in many rocks and soils. Look for these colorations as indicators.
- Check for Heavy Samples. Many iron oxides, especially hematite, have a relatively high specific gravity, making samples feel heavier than expected for their size.
- Perform a Streak Test. The streak color is a crucial diagnostic. Hematite has a reddish-brown streak, while goethite/limonite have a yellowish-brown streak. This distinguishes them from other dark minerals.
- Examine for Botryoidal or Earthy Forms. Goethite and limonite frequently occur in rounded, grape-like (botryoidal) masses or as earthy, powdery coatings.
