Australia
Pilbara region (Western Australia) is a major global source, primarily hematite from BIFs.
Brazil
Minas Gerais and Carajás regions, known for vast high-grade hematite deposits.
China
Numerous deposits across the country, including Anshan and Bayan Obo.
India
Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Karnataka states have significant hematite and magnetite deposits.
Russia
KMA (Kursk Magnetic Anomaly) is one of the largest iron ore basins globally, primarily magnetite.
United States
Lake Superior region (Minnesota, Michigan) with extensive BIFs (taconite), and smaller deposits elsewhere.

Labrador Trough (Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador) with significant BIF-related deposits.
Collecting tips
- Geological Maps. Consult regional geological maps to identify areas known for iron formations or iron-rich sedimentary units.
- Color and Streak. Look for reddish-brown, black, or yellowish-brown rocks. The streak test is crucial: hematite gives a reddish-brown streak, magnetite a black streak, and goethite/limonite a yellowish-brown streak.
- Magnetism. Magnetite is strongly magnetic and will attract a magnet. Some hematite can be weakly magnetic due to minor magnetite inclusions.
- Density. Iron ores are typically dense, feeling heavy for their size due to the high iron content (specific gravity 4.5-5.3 for hematite/magnetite).
- Associated Minerals. Iron ores are often found with chert, jasper, quartz, and other sedimentary or metamorphic minerals.
