Collecting tips
- Look in Volcanic and Sedimentary Areas. Red Jasper is often found in areas with past volcanic activity or in sedimentary rock layers, particularly where chert or other silica-rich rocks are present.
- Check Riverbeds and Gravel Pits. Water erosion can transport jasper, so riverbeds, stream banks, and gravel pits are good places to search for tumbled pieces.
- Examine Road Cuts and Construction Sites. Freshly exposed rock faces can reveal jasper veins or nodules that are otherwise hidden.
- Look for Opaque, Reddish Rocks. Identify its characteristic opaque red color and dense, fine-grained texture. It will not scratch with a steel knife.
