Collecting tips
- Look for Sedimentary Environments. Focus on areas with ancient sedimentary rock formations, especially those that show evidence of silicification or hydrothermal activity. Riverbeds and alluvial fans can also yield tumbled pieces.
- Examine for Distinctive Patterns. The key identifying feature is the 'script' or 'calligraphy' like patterns. Look for dark, intricate markings against a lighter background.
- Check Hardness. Jasper is relatively hard (Mohs 6.5-7). It will scratch glass and will not be easily scratched by a steel knife.
