Red Jasper occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Look for Iron-Rich Environments. Red Jasper often forms in areas with significant iron content, such as ancient volcanic regions, hydrothermal vents, or sedimentary beds with iron-rich minerals.
2. Examine Riverbeds and Gravel Pits. Due to its hardness and resistance to weathering, Red Jasper can be found as pebbles and cobbles in riverbeds, stream gravels, and glacial till, having been transported from its original source.
3. Check for Veins and Nodules. In situ, Red Jasper can be found as vein fillings within other rocks or as nodules within sedimentary layers. Look for reddish-brown masses contrasting with the surrounding rock.
4. Utilize a Hardness Test. Red Jasper will scratch glass and steel (Mohs hardness 6.5-7), which can help differentiate it from softer red minerals or rocks.
5. Observe Fracture Patterns. A characteristic conchoidal (shell-like) fracture is typical of jasper and other cryptocrystalline quartz varieties.
