Collecting tips
- Look for Iron-Rich Environments. Red Jasper's color is due to iron oxides, so areas with historical or current iron mineralization, such as banded iron formations or areas with red soils, can be good indicators.
- Check Volcanic and Hydrothermal Areas. Many jasper deposits are associated with past volcanic activity or hydrothermal alteration, where silica-rich fluids deposited the material in veins or as replacements.
- Examine Riverbeds and Gravel Pits. Jasper is durable and often survives weathering and erosion, so it can be found as pebbles and cobbles in alluvial deposits.
- Observe for Opaque, Reddish Stones. Visually identify opaque, typically uniformly red to reddish-brown stones. Test for hardness (scratches glass) and look for a conchoidal fracture if a piece is broken.
