Collecting tips
- Look for weathered zones. Kaolinite is a product of weathering. Search in areas where feldspar-rich rocks (granites, pegmatites, arkoses) have undergone intense chemical alteration, often appearing as soft, white, clayey masses.
- Check for hydrothermal alteration. Some kaolinite deposits are formed by hydrothermal fluids altering parent rocks. Look for areas with evidence of past volcanic or geothermal activity.
- Observe stream beds and sedimentary basins. Kaolinite can be transported and deposited in sedimentary environments. Fine-grained, white clay layers in sedimentary sequences might be kaolinite.
- Perform a 'stick to tongue' test (with caution). Pure kaolinite will stick to the tongue due to its fine porosity and ability to absorb moisture. This is a classic, though not definitive, field test for clay minerals. Always ensure the material is not contaminated or potentially hazardous before performing this test.
