Brazil
Known for various kyanite occurrences, including some black varieties, often in metamorphic terrains.
United States (North Carolina, Georgia)
Appalachian Mountains region, where kyanite-bearing schists and gneisses are common. Black kyanite can be found in these areas.

Alpine metamorphic rocks can yield kyanite, including some darker varieties.

Collecting tips
- Look in Metamorphic Terrains. Focus your search on areas known for high-grade metamorphic rocks, especially schists and gneisses that are rich in aluminum.
- Identify Associated Minerals. Kyanite often co-occurs with quartz, muscovite, garnet, and staurolite. Finding these minerals can indicate the presence of kyanite.
- Observe Crystal Habit. Look for the characteristic bladed or columnar crystals. Black kyanite often forms radiating aggregates.
- Check for Differential Hardness. Kyanite exhibits anisotropic hardness (4.5-5 parallel to the long axis, 6-7 perpendicular to it). While difficult to test in the field, it's a key diagnostic feature.
