Tri-State Mining District, USA
Historically a major producer of lead and zinc, encompassing parts of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Known for large MVT deposits.
Broken Hill, Australia
One of the world's largest and richest lead-zinc-silver deposits, a classic example of a SEDEX deposit.
Freiberg, Germany
A historic mining district famous for its polymetallic vein deposits, including significant galena.
Idaho, USA
The Coeur d'Alene district is a prominent silver-lead-zinc mining region with abundant galena.

Historically significant for its tin, copper, and lead mining, with galena found in hydrothermal veins.
Collecting tips
- Look for Associated Minerals. Galena is frequently found with sphalerite (zinc sulfide), pyrite (iron sulfide), chalcopyrite (copper iron sulfide), quartz, calcite, and fluorite. The presence of these minerals can indicate a potential galena deposit.
- Check for High Density. Galena is notably heavy for its size due to its lead content. This high specific gravity (7.4-7.6 g/cm³) is a useful field identification characteristic.
- Observe Cleavage and Luster. Its perfect cubic cleavage, causing it to break into cubes, and its bright metallic luster on fresh surfaces are very distinctive. Look for these features in outcrops or mine dumps.
- Safety Precautions. Galena contains lead, which is toxic. Always wear gloves when handling galena and wash hands thoroughly afterwards. Avoid inhaling dust if breaking samples. Do not ingest. Keep away from children. Prolonged exposure or ingestion can lead to lead poisoning.
