1. Look for Silica-Rich Environments. Jasper often forms in areas with past or present volcanic activity, hydrothermal alteration, or sedimentary basins where silica precipitation has occurred. Look for outcrops near ancient volcanic flows, hot springs, or areas with chert and flint deposits.
2. Examine Rock Outcrops and Riverbeds. Jasper is quite hard and resistant to weathering, so it can be found as float in riverbeds, gravel deposits, and exposed rock outcrops. Look for rounded, smooth stones with characteristic patterns.
3. Check for Distinctive Patterns. The key identifying feature is the 'leopard skin' pattern of orbicular or spotted inclusions. Look for these contrasting circular or irregular markings against a lighter background.
4. Perform a Hardness Test (Carefully). Jasper has a Mohs hardness of 6.5-7. It should scratch glass and not be easily scratched by a steel knife. This helps differentiate it from softer rocks.
