White Cliffs of Dover, England
Iconic chalk cliffs, part of the Chalk Group, a major geological formation in Southern England and Northern France, dating to the Late Cretaceous.

The Niobrara Formation in western Kansas is famous for its chalk beds, particularly the Smoky Hill Chalk Member, rich in marine fossils.

Collecting tips
- Look for White Outcrops. Chalk often forms distinctive white cliffs or hillsides, especially in coastal or river valley settings. Its bright color makes it stand out.
- Test for Softness. Chalk is very soft. You should be able to scratch it easily with a fingernail or a metal tool. It will also feel powdery and leave a residue on your fingers.
- Acid Test. As it is composed of calcium carbonate, chalk will effervesce (fizz) vigorously when a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) is applied to its surface. This is a definitive test for carbonate rocks.
- Check for Microfossils. If you have access to a microscope, examine a small sample. You should be able to observe the characteristic coccoliths and other microfossils that make up the rock.
- Geological Maps. Consult local geological maps. Chalk formations are often clearly delineated and can guide you to potential collecting sites.
