Collecting tips
- Look for Arid/Semi-Arid Climates. Caliche formation is characteristic of dry regions. Focus your search in areas with low rainfall and high evaporation rates.
- Examine Soil Profiles and Outcrops. Caliche often forms within or at the base of soil profiles. Look for white, powdery, or nodular layers in road cuts, stream banks, or other exposed sections of soil and bedrock.
- Test with Acid. Both limestone and caliche will effervesce (fizz) vigorously when a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) is applied, confirming the presence of calcium carbonate. This helps distinguish it from non-carbonate rocks.
- Observe Textural Differences. Look for distinct textural variations within the rock – the primary limestone might be more uniform, while the caliche will appear as irregular patches, veins, or coatings, often lighter in color and sometimes softer.
