Collecting tips
- Look for Spherical Grains. The most distinctive feature is the presence of small, spherical to ellipsoidal grains (ooids) that resemble fish roe. A hand lens can help in identification.
- Acid Test. Like all limestones, oolitic limestone will effervesce (fizz) vigorously when a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) is applied, due to its calcium carbonate composition.
- Examine Geological Maps. Consult geological maps for areas known to have carbonate platforms, shallow marine deposits, or specific limestone formations of appropriate age.
- Check for Building Stone Quarries. Many active and abandoned quarries for building stone will expose oolitic limestone, especially in regions known for its use in construction.
