Where to find Fossiliferous Limestone
North America
Extensive deposits in the Appalachian Basin (e.g., New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio), Midcontinent region (e.g., Indiana, Illinois, Missouri), and parts of the Western Interior Seaway (e.g., Texas, New Mexico) from Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras.

Widespread in the United Kingdom (e.g., Carboniferous Limestone), France, Germany, and other parts of Western and Eastern Europe, particularly in Paleozoic and Mesozoic marine sequences.
Asia
Significant occurrences in China, India, and parts of Southeast Asia, often associated with ancient marine platforms and basins.

Found in various Paleozoic and Mesozoic basins across the continent.
Collecting tips
- Look for Outcrops. Search for exposed rock faces in road cuts, quarries, stream beds, and coastal cliffs, particularly in regions known for sedimentary rock formations.
- Identify Marine Sedimentary Sequences. Fossiliferous limestones are typically found within sequences of other marine sedimentary rocks like shales, sandstones, and other types of limestones.
- Examine for Fossils. Carefully inspect the rock surface for visible shell fragments or whole brachiopod fossils. A hand lens can be very useful for identifying smaller or less distinct fossils.
- Acid Test (Caution Advised). A small drop of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) will cause calcite (the primary mineral) to effervesce (fizz), indicating the presence of carbonate. Always use caution and wear appropriate safety gear when handling acids.
