Where to find Limestone
United States
Extensive deposits across the Midwest (e.g., Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri), Florida, Texas, and the Appalachian region. Notable for Mississippian and Pennsylvanian age limestones.
Europe
Significant deposits in the UK (e.g., White Cliffs of Dover - chalk), France (Paris Basin), Germany, Italy (Carrara marble, though metamorphosed), and the Mediterranean region.
Middle East
Widespread in countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel, forming vast plateaus and mountain ranges.
China
Large reserves, particularly in the southern and southwestern regions, contributing to karst landscapes.
Mexico
Yucatan Peninsula is a vast limestone platform, famous for cenotes and karst topography.
Collecting tips
- Look for Karst Topography. Limestone terrains often exhibit distinctive karst features such as sinkholes, caves, disappearing streams, and solution valleys due to its solubility in acidic water.
- Check for Fossils. Many limestones are rich in fossils (shells, corals, crinoids, foraminifera), which are excellent indicators of its biogenic origin and can help differentiate it from other rocks.
- Acid Test. A definitive test for limestone is its reaction with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl). Calcite (the primary mineral in limestone) will effervesce vigorously, producing carbon dioxide gas. Dolomite, a similar rock, will only effervesce weakly or not at all unless powdered.
- Examine for Bedding. As a sedimentary rock, limestone often displays bedding planes, indicating layers of deposition. These can range from thin laminations to thick beds.
