Where to find Manganese Nodule
Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ)
A vast abyssal plain in the Pacific Ocean, between Hawaii and Mexico, known for the highest concentrations and abundance of manganese nodules globally. This is the primary target area for future deep-sea mining.
Peru Basin
Located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, another significant area for manganese nodule deposits.
Penrhyn Basin
Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, east of the Cook Islands, also hosts substantial nodule fields.
Indian Ocean
Specific areas within the Indian Ocean, such as the Central Indian Ocean Basin, contain economically interesting manganese nodule deposits.
Atlantic Ocean
While less abundant than in the Pacific, some manganese nodule occurrences are found in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in areas of slow sedimentation.
Collecting tips
- Deep-Sea Exploration. Manganese nodules are found exclusively on the deep ocean floor. Direct observation or collection requires specialized deep-sea submersibles, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) equipped with cameras and sampling tools. They are not accessible by conventional surface exploration methods.
- Geophysical Surveys. Acoustic surveys (e.g., multibeam sonar) can map seafloor topography and identify areas with potential nodule fields. Sub-bottom profilers can provide information on sediment thickness, which is inversely correlated with nodule abundance.
- Sediment Coring and Dredging. Box corers, grab samplers, and dredges are used to collect seafloor sediments and nodules for detailed analysis of their composition, size, and abundance.
- Environmental Impact Assessment. Due to the sensitive nature of deep-sea ecosystems, any exploration or potential future mining activities are subject to stringent environmental regulations and require comprehensive environmental impact assessments.
