Where to find Kyanite Garnet Schist
Appalachian Mountains, USA
Extensive occurrences in the metamorphic core of the Appalachian orogen, particularly in states like North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia.
Himalayan Orogen, Asia
Common in the high-grade metamorphic zones of the Himalayas, reflecting intense collisional tectonics.
European Alps
Found in various metamorphic complexes within the Alpine chain, indicative of high-pressure metamorphism.
Fennoscandian Shield, Scandinavia
Occurs in ancient Precambrian metamorphic belts.
Brazil
Significant deposits of kyanite-bearing schists are found in various metamorphic terranes.
Collecting tips
- Look for Outcrops. Search in areas known for regional metamorphism, such as mountain ranges, eroded shield areas, and road cuts where bedrock is exposed.
- Identify Porphyroblasts. Look for distinct, often large, bladed blue or white crystals (kyanite) and reddish, equant crystals (garnet) within a foliated, mica-rich matrix.
- Observe Foliation. The rock will exhibit a strong planar fabric (schistosity) due to the alignment of mica minerals, which often wraps around the porphyroblasts.
- Check Hardness. Kyanite has an unusual hardness anisotropy (4.5-5 parallel to length, 6-7 perpendicular to length), while garnet is hard (6.5-7.5). This can help differentiate them from other minerals.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Silvery-gray to dark gray with blue/white blades and red/brown crystals.
- Luster:
- Silky to pearly (mica), vitreous to pearly (kyanite), vitreous to resinous (garnet).
- Streak:
- White (for kyanite and most garnets, though some iron-rich garnets can have a faint reddish streak).
