1. Look for Iron-Rich Environments. Red Jasper's color comes from iron oxides. Search in areas with evidence of iron mineralization, such as reddish soils, iron-stained rocks, or near ancient volcanic activity.
2. Examine Sedimentary Layers. Jasper can form in chert beds within sedimentary sequences. Look for dense, fine-grained, reddish layers or nodules.
3. Check Hydrothermal Veins. In some cases, red jasper can be found filling veins or fractures in host rocks, often associated with quartz and other hydrothermal minerals.
4. Riverbeds and Alluvial Deposits. Jasper is durable and can be transported by water. Look for rounded, reddish pebbles or cobbles in riverbeds, gravel pits, and alluvial fans.
5. Hardness Test. Jasper is hard (Mohs 6.5-7). It will scratch glass and steel. This helps differentiate it from softer red minerals.
6. Opaque Nature. Red Jasper is typically opaque. If a red stone is translucent or transparent, it is likely not jasper (e.g., carnelian can be translucent).
