Where to find Picture Jasper
Oregon, USA
Known for Biggs Jasper, a famous variety of Picture Jasper with distinct landscape patterns, found in volcanic ash beds.
Idaho, USA
Produces various types of Picture Jasper, often with intricate patterns.
Australia
Several localities yield Picture Jasper, sometimes with unique colorations and patterns.
Africa (e.g., Madagascar, South Africa)
Sources of diverse Picture Jasper types, including those with vibrant colors and detailed scenes.
Brazil
Known for various chalcedony and jasper deposits, including some with pictorial qualities.
Collecting tips
- Look for Silica-Rich Environments. Search in areas with past volcanic activity, sedimentary rock outcrops, or hydrothermal alteration zones. Jasper often forms in association with chert beds, volcanic tuffs, or as vein fillings.
- Examine Rock Outcrops and Stream Beds. Picture Jasper can be found as nodules, veins, or massive formations within host rock. Look for weathered pieces in stream beds or exposed outcrops where erosion has revealed the material.
- Identify Characteristic Patterns. The most distinguishing feature is the 'picture' or landscape-like patterns. Look for contrasting colors and flowing lines that suggest geological formations, trees, or clouds. Unpolished pieces may require wetting to reveal patterns.
- Test Hardness. Jasper is relatively hard (Mohs 6.5-7). It will scratch glass and will not be easily scratched by a steel knife. This helps differentiate it from softer sedimentary rocks.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Earthy browns, tans, creams, grays with contrasting patterns.
- Luster:
- Dull to sub-vitreous (unpolished), waxy to vitreous (polished).
- Streak:
- White.
