Brazil
Minas Gerais is a world-renowned source for both high-quality Topaz (especially Imperial Topaz) and Aquamarine.
Pakistan
Known for producing fine pink, golden, and blue Topaz, as well as Aquamarine.
Russia
The Ural Mountains have historically produced excellent Topaz, including pink varieties. Aquamarine is also found.
Nigeria
Significant producer of blue and colorless Topaz, and Aquamarine.
Afghanistan
Produces high-quality Aquamarine and some Topaz.
United States
Topaz is found in Utah, Colorado, and Texas. Aquamarine is found in California and Colorado.
Collecting tips
- Pegmatite Environments. Focus your search on granitic pegmatites, which are coarse-grained igneous rocks often rich in rare minerals. Look for pockets or vugs within these formations.
- Hydrothermal Veins. Explore areas with evidence of hydrothermal activity, such as quartz veins cutting through igneous or metamorphic rocks.
- Alluvial Deposits. Both minerals are durable and can be found in placer deposits (riverbeds, gravels) downstream from their primary sources. Look for well-formed, water-worn crystals.
- Hardness Test. Topaz (8) and Beryl (7.5-8) are harder than quartz (7). They will scratch quartz, but quartz will not scratch them. This can help differentiate them from common quartz.
- Cleavage Observation. Topaz's perfect basal cleavage is a key diagnostic feature. While Beryl also has cleavage, it's less pronounced. Observing cleavage planes can help distinguish them from other minerals.
